Galway reached the All-Ireland football final for the first time in 1919, when they were beaten by Kildare by 2 – 5 to 0 – 1. In 1922 they were beaten by Dublin by 6 points to 4. In 1925 they won it for the first time, beating Cavan by 3 – 2 to 1 - 2. In 1928, the Sam Maguire Trophy was presented to the GAA, and ever since, it has been the dream of every county in Ireland to hold it aloft in Croke Park on the third Sunday in September.

Mayo's road to possible redemption has seen them drawn with Longford in the first round of the qualifiers. The draw which took place on Sunday evening, pits John O'Mahony's dethroned Connacht champions against the midlands men who were knocked out of the Lenister championship by Louth in Portlaoise.

Anyone who has been up at Ballybrit during the week will know how difficult it can be to predict a winner. Likewise in the All-Ireland football championship there is no real consensus on who will be first past the finishing post on September 21.

That game is on in Portlaoise tomorrow at 7pm and is a difficult one to call. Limerick put it right up to Cork in the Munster final and only went down by a single point in a game they should have won.

There was only one real surprise when John O'Mahony announced his starting line up for this Sunday's clash with Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park. Castlebar's Barry Moran, who was expected to miss the game with a broken bone in his hand, was named at full forward. Moran, who picked up the injury in training last week, was expected to be sidelined by the hand problem for a number of weeks. But in a similar turn of events to what happened when Ronan McGarrity suffered a facial injury in a club championship match in the lead up to the Connacht final, he seems to have healed quickly enough to be given the nod.
